Stiges, Barcelona, Spain

7 Days Sunday, March 18 - Sunday, March 25 2012

8 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms (ensuite)
2 bedrooms 1 bath coach house

Set high on a hillside in the Penedes wine region, the masia is surrounded by the Garaf National Park and offers dramatic sea or mountain views from every room or terrace. This tranquil haven has more than 300 acres of private grounds with vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees, yet is only a 30 minute drive from Barcelona and 10 minutes from the lively beach resort of Sitges.

The casita adjoins the Main House separated by a patio area. It is a two storey cottage which is open plan. It is entirely separate from the main house and as well as access from the main house has its own drive from the dirt road which runs along the side. It has a bathroom to the right on entry beyond which is a fully fitted kitchen and small dining area. Past the kitchen is a lounge with double sofa bed. The upstairs area is a mezzanine construction split into two areas in which there is a double and single bed. To go upstairs you will need to negotiate a spiral staircase which is not suitable for the elderly. The casita is a simpler cozier style to the main house and offers extra space which is communicable with the main house but also allows families or teenagers a separate and distinct place.

Catering Balance

Catering Deposit Update
I must apologize, catering deposit is 1000 euros not USD. Our original deposit should have been $1330.00 plus the wire transfer fee of $35 = $1365.00.

$1330 chef fee/ 18pp = $74pp
$35 wire transfer
$1365. total
$40 chef
$50 groceries
15 - 20% tip will be collected in Spain

I have already paid the difference of $15pp. I am hopeful that the $150 will still cover the price for the chef as well as the groceries for our brunches. I will collect the remaining $90 in Spain as stated in previous blog post. This price may be more or less depending on the price of groceries.

I do not need the additional $15, it is still included in the $90 balance that is owed upon arrival. I just wanted everyone to know as we have $300 less to spend on groceries.

Lastly, this price has nothing to do with the items we will stock in the villa, upon arrival.

Argenteria 51 (Born) / Barcelona Tel. 93 268 85 59
INTRODUCTION
Here down the old silversmith’s street in the exciting Born district, stands the second Taller de Tapas. Once Barcelona’s commercial heart, this area is now known for its designer boutiques and some of the best shopping in town. The listed building, dating from the 16th century, was originally a nun’s convent. Converted with care and respect it is now a lively, expansive restaurant. Its floor-to-ceiling front windows look out over a picturesque square where you can eat gourmet local delicacies from the Costa Brava such as king prawns from Palamòs and Nuri’s home made fresh goat’s cheese drizzled with honey in the shade of a tree. Its long bar and kitchen are an island of fine food and wine inside the big central room. Argenteria pulsates with life morning, noon and night. It’s a great place to eat – but a fun place to meet people too.

Shuttle to Villa

We can supply a mini bus and a six seater for the main group and then a car for the two people arriving later. The total price for everyone to include luggage, motorway tolls, airport parking is 299.00 euros, which equates to just 23.00 euros per person.

As a suggestion, the main group arriving at 7.50 can wait in arrivals for the later arrival and have a relaxing coffee and catch up. We will arrive slightly later when Katrina arrives. Our team will meet you in the coffee lounge at 9.30. As you are not checking in until 11am, there is no rush.

My mobile is +34 663801325 Mike’s is +34 647044889 Do you have a mobile number?

International Drivers Permit

Some of my guest want to rent cars while vacationing in Spain, will they need an international drivers license?

Re. your question about International Driving Licences for USA citizens; having checked on the internet and also after phoning our local Europecar rental showroom, it looks like you have to have an IDP (International Driving Permit) to hire a car in Spain. Also, you would need to bring along your normal US licence.

How to obtain your ITP:

International Driving Permit (IDP) and Inter-American Driving Permit (IADP)
If you are planning on doing any driving while on your next trip abroad consider getting an International Driving Permit (IDP) or for traveling in Central and South America, an Inter-American Driving Permit (IADP).

All AAA clubs in the US and Canada are the only legal organization to issue the IDP and IADP to holders of a valid U.S./Canadian driver license. To apply, simply print the application, fill in the information requested and bring or mail the following to a AAA office nearest you:

•a completed application form,

•two ORIGINAL passport-size photos,

•a $15 permit fee and

•a photocopy of your driver's license.
NOTE: If you are currently overseas or need to mail your application, please mail your completed application to the following office and address: AAA/IDP, 1000 AAA Dr., Heathrow, FL 32746 Attn: Mailstop #28. Please allow 4-6 weeks for return mail.

International Driving Permit (IDP)
A.Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.

B.Applicant must hold a current U.S. state, territorial, or U.S. Department of State driver's license which is not under revocation or suspension and which is valid at the time the IDP is issued. (State side license must remain valid for IDP to be valid.)

C.The application must be completed in its entirety showing the date on which the application is made and be signed by the applicant in the same manner as his or her signature appears on the supporting home state or territorial license.

D.Applicant must furnish two recent passport type photographs (2" X 2") with the applicant's signature on the back.

E.A fee of $15 must be collected and retained by the issuing AAA club.

F.All AAA clubs in the United States and Canada are authorized and are the only legal organizations to issue the International and Inter-American Driving Permits to holders of a valid U.S./Canadian drivers license. The United States was one of the first countries to ratify the "United Nations Conventions on International Road Traffic of 19 September 1949", which came into effect in March, 1952. Over 100 countries are party to the Convention. In April, 1952, the U.S. Department of State officially authorized AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) to issue an International Driving Permit to any resident of the United States or its possessions who is 18 years or over and who holds a valid U.S. state driving license. This authorization to the two responsible Automobile Associations was based on the fact that they are non-profit organizations with member clubs in all parts of the United States, giving wide local coverage for information and service, as well as a close relationship with motoring associations in all other countries which have likewise been authorized by their respective governments to perform these services for international motorists. The issuance of the International Driving Permit is an automobile club service to the general public which cannot be restricted to AAA members nor to people who make their travel arrangements through AAA Travel Agency.

G.The IDP is issued for a one-year period. It is valid for one year from effective date provided the state license is still valid throughout that period.

H.If the applicant's state license expires before the one-year expiration date, the applicant should be aware that the IDP is only valid for the length of time that the domestic driver's license is valid, but the IDP will be issued for a one-year period based on the intention to have the state license renewed at the appropriate time.

I.For those on active duty in the military and your U.S. license has or is due to expire, each state has its own provisions for extending the validity of state driving licenses for active duty military. Though valid in a home state, an expired U.S. license held by active duty military may not be valid or acceptable in a foreign country per that country's driving requirements. See www.DMV.org for state information on renewals, keeping in mind that an IDP is only a translation of the license, not a license to drive. Military applicants must understand the conditions under which an IDP is valid if insisting upon issuance of a permit against an expired U.S. license that may be considered valid in their home state until discharged from active duty.

NOTE: If a state DMV allows renewal online or by mail for active duty military personnel stationed out of state, applicants should renew their license prior to issuance of an IDP. Some states will issue a DL236 card to be presented with an expired license to extend validity.

J.The IDP cannot be issued on the basis of a U.S. Government License which is limited to the operation of government-owned vehicles only.

K.The IDP cannot be renewed on the strength of a previously issued permit. Each applicant must reapply for a new IDP.

L.The IDP is not valid for driving in the United States or its territories.

M.The IDP is not valid by itself for driving and must be carried with the applicant's regular driver's license.

N.The IDP should never be promoted as a single source of identification for situations when a photo identification is required. Passengers have been denied boarding for flights when an IDP was presented as the only form of identification bearing a photograph.

Indoor Go Karting Barcelona

For $125 Euros per person 2 hours

This activity takes place at a state-of-the-art karting complex on the outskirts of Barcelona and provides great entertainment for both the experienced go karter and the first timer or novice. This indoor go karting track is a twisty, challenging circuit with a bridge, a tunnel and some fast corners.

Once you arrive, dependent on the size of the group, if you are with a big group, then the group may be split into 2. All drivers will receive a safety briefing and instruction before any racing begins.

The activity consists of 3 timed trials where you will be looking for fast times as well as racing against your colleagues. The last session will be a race off to decide who the winners and losers are. There are prizes for the winners who can celebrate in traditional formula 1 style.

All the equipment is provided by the circuit. You’ll be required to wear overalls and helmets and there will be marshals making sure you respect the course rules. For larger corporate groups, team racing can be organised as well as a mini formula 1 style scenario.

Transport to and from the circuit is included in the price. There is a guide on hand to look after you throughout the duration of the activity, a modern bar for drinks, light snacks and a great viewing area to observe all the thrills and spills.

Taxi vs. Car Rental

Daily Car Rental - You can rent cars from www.rebilrent.com

Will Rebilrent leave the rental car at the airport or the villa for a Sunday arrival or will we have to wait until Monday to rent a car.

They may well be able to organise for Sunday – they don’t like this but will do so if asked, is my guess. I should make sure by asking them direct.

What is the price of taxi from villa to Sitges and cost for the rails to take you from Sitges to Barcelona?

Taking a taxi from the villa to the beach of Sitges is around Eur 15 (20 USD).
Return trip to Sitges from Barcelona by train/rails is approx 5-8 euros (7-11 USD).

Catering (Breakfast Only)

Personal Chef – Rates and Services for 2012

Euro 170 for chef converted to $245 USD
divided by 17pp = $14.41pp per day
Weekly Total for the chef and 1 assistant is $101.00 PLUS TIPS
For $101.00 chef will shop daily, cook and clean up after breakfast only.

This rate DOES NOT INCLUDE the price of groceries. I am thinking that an additional $50.00 per person will take care of the groceries, depending on what items you would like to add to the grocery list for breakfast each morning. Keep in mind, this price may go up or down, as the USD isn't as strong as the Euro.

In the past, we paid for catering upon our arrival, this will not be the case for Spain. If you read below, line item #9 request a $1000.00 deposit, to be wire transfered at the time of booking. When I hear back from chef directly and she gives me some suggestions for menu options, I will forward information on to everyone and collect deposit of $60.30pp, which includes the $35.00 wire transfer fee.

I will send out a shopping list as we get closer to the departure day.

The Breakdown

$245.00 day / 17pp = $14.41 daily price for breakfast

$14.41 * 7 days = $100.88 pp for the week (sunday - sat)

$50. 00 pp for groceries for the week (price could change)

$150.88 total for catering plus 20% in tips (price could change)
Keep in mind this has to be paid in Euros.

1. About the Chef

Gillian Wylie was 2006 and 2007 Quarter-Finalist of BBC Television’s Masterchef Goes Large series and has 6 recipes published in its latest cookbook. She has catered for an eclectic list of private clients, including some well-known celebrities, and has also been location chef for a reality TV show and consultant for its ‘scary food’ competitions. She regularly cooks for family groups, corporate retreats, weddings, parties and special events at villas and country houses in the Barcelona area. Gillian comes highly recommended by the owners of this property and previous clients.
Her culinary repertoire includes Spanish and Catalan, modern British; French; Italian; Southern Mediterranean; Thai; Indian; Mexican and Japanese. She holds the Wine & Spirit Educational Trust Intermediate Certificate in Wines and Spirits (with distinction) and also offers wine tasting, local market tours and onsite cookery tuition.

2. Daily Shopping

The chef always shops on each day of cooking. A large part of her ingredients are fresh from the market so she will always spend approximately two hours a day shopping.
She will take the food to the property and put it away in a fridge and cupboard dedicated for ingredients she will use to cook your meals, (to keep them separate from any general groceries you have bought yourselves). If you would like an initial stock of food and alcohol available on arrival, the chef charges retail prices plus 20% service charge.

3. Menu

The chef will consult with guests on their food preferences in advance. When this has not been possible, the chef will decide on the menu for the first two days and shop accordingly. Therefore please ensure that you have at least 500 euro in cash on your arrival to reimburse her. After that, the guests can agree the menu with the chef on a day-to-day basis. Please state dietary requirements and allergies in advance.

4. Service

The chef and her assistant will
- suggest and plan menus
- write ingredient and shopping lists
- shop and put away groceries
- prepare the food
- lay the table
- serve the food (depending on group size, this would be plated or served ‘family style’ on platters on the table for everyone to help themselves)
- clear-up the food and save any leftovers for you in your fridge
- wash-up plates, pots, pans etc.
- set up and replenish a self-service tea and coffee station
- leave after the plates from the last course have been cleared and washed but won’t stay for the last coffee cups or glasses for example, as doing so may take them well into the night

5. Rubbish

The chef will be responsible for taking away the rubbish and the recycling generated from the meal(s) that she has prepared for you each day she is there. For your own rubbish and on days when the chef is not used, guests are responsible for their own rubbish disposal and recycling.

6. Cost of Ingredients

The chef will charge for items purchased at cost, unless an initial stock-up has been requested, (see point 2). Payment for ongoing grocery purchases should be made direct with the chef who will keep a tally of receipts and guests can reimburse her for the shopping on a pay-as-you-go basis. Please ensure you have sufficient cash on your arrival, (see point 3).

7. State of the Kitchen and Dining Areas

As the guests and the chef will be sharing the kitchen and dining areas, guests are asked to ensure that the kitchen and dining areas are clear and tidy before the chef arrives. It is not the chef’s responsibility to clear or wash dirty plates from meals she has not prepared. If you think you might require additional cleaning services to cover for this, please ask your booking contact.

8. Chef Fees

These rates are in euro and cover the services as listed in point 4 above, as well as tax, petrol, cooking facilities and utilities and the use of the in-house stock of spices and condiments.
Breakfast €170 (plus the cost of groceries)
2 Course Lunch €200 (plus the cost of groceries)
2 Course Dinner €220 (plus the cost of groceries)
You can arrange meal times and combinations of the above i.e. breakfast and dinner every day or lunch and dinner, in advance with the chef. Breakfast can be served over a duration of up to 1.5 hours, starting at a mutually agreed time. Children’s menus and/or different sittings, as well as celebration meals incur an additional charge. Canapés to accompany a dinner can be made for a fee of €50 plus ingredient costs. Additional courses can be added for a cooking fee of €50 extra per course. Event catering for larger groups or more formal occasions is priced separately.

9. Securing the Services of the Chef

Please book as far in advance as possible to insure availability – ideally when you book the property. A minimum weekly commitment of 1000 euro-worth of meal rates is required. Payment is paid direct to the chef at time of booking by bank transfer.

10. Additional Services

If you are interested in a guided trip to a local food market to buy the ingredients for a lunch, or an informal group cookery class at the property, please enquire with the chef.
